12mR Regatta - Christchurch Bay

July 12-15. This event will be based at the
Royal Solent Yacht Club, Yarmouth.

Formed in 1878 the original headquarters were in the George Hotel, Yarmouth, the first commodore being the Marquis of Londonderry and moved to the purpose built club house in 1898. Has a long history of racing keelboat classes. More history here


Will be in Christchurch Bay which usually provides clear air and less tide than in the Solent. To reach the race area, boats will sail west, past Hurst Castle and through the North Channel.

Social Programme

Yarmouth Castle - party venue

To be confirmed, but may include:

  • Reception in Yarmouth Castle,
    built, along with Hurst Castle, to defend access through the West Solent. Yarmouth Castle was the last and most sophisticated addition to Henry VIII's coastal defences; it was completed after his death in 1547, with the first new-style 'arrowhead' artillery bastion built in England. More Information Hurst castle was built by Henry VIII as one of a chain of coastal fortresses and was completed in 1544. Charles I was imprisoned here in 1648 before being taken to London to his trial and execution. More Information
  • Cruise upriver with drinks and dinner receptions at famous houses of West Wight.
  • Party at The Towers - a Jacobean house with extensive gardens fronting the Solent. Varied entertainments.

Moorings & Logistics

Moorings to be outside the harbour on permanent mooring buoys, just east of the harbour entrance. A launch service will be provided. Containers may be stored at Yarmouth with no charge.
